Position Summary:
Responsibilities will involve but not be limited to: Pre-clinical, clinical and didactic teaching in Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral Pediatric Dentistry programs; including overseeing patient care provided by the Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral students as well as supervising the treatment of patients using sedation and/or general anesthesia. Active participation in research is anticipated.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Supervise all aspects of patient care provided by the Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral students including treatment using sedation and/or general anesthesia.
2. Review the progression of treatment for each assigned patient using guidelines established by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry;
3. Assist with the coordination of the site faculty activities related to clinic coverage, student performance, patient needs, treatment plan development, and implementation of all treatment;
4. Assist in monitoring student attendance during time designated for patient care;
5. Review the records of patients whose treatment has been documented as completed.
6. Review patient records prior to termination of patient treatment. Authorization is documented in the consultation section of the patient’s record;
7. Participate in meetings with Pediatric Dentistry Faculty;
8. Perform student evaluations for the patient care and management grade.
9. Be available for advice and counsel.
10. Follow the standards, policies and procedures of RSDM, as outlined in the Clinic Manual, Radiation Hazard, Infection Control, Patient’s Bill of Rights, and RSDM Confidentiality policies, and Quality Assurance protocols at the sites.
11. Supervise and instruct students in their respective disciplines, by hands-on demonstration when required;
12. Ensure, with site faculty, that RSDM standards for the education of students are maintained;
13. Conduct small group discussions with students when possible.
14. Participate in Pediatric Dentistry faculty standardization and calibration.
15. Participate in evaluation of students’ competencies.
16. Remain current in the field of dentistry on a level applicable to the title.
17. Accomplish dentistry using pharmacological adjuncts depending on individual circumstances and dentist qualifications. Consults with the medical staff in cases showing oral manifestations of medical conditions;
18. Available for consultation by the medical staff in cases of oral pathology and other related conditions of common interest;
19. Arrange program and treatment for patients experiencing oral trauma, oral pain, oral infection and other pathology.
20. Assist in conducting program of preventive dentistry, dental education and oral hygiene.
21. Diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and malformations of teeth, gingiva, mucosa, and related oral structures with reasonable patient acceptable sensitivity.
22. Clean, restore, extract and replace teeth using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications and surgical instruments.
23. Administer local anesthesia and other supportive medication.
24. Keep such records and reports as are necessary for the discharge and control of his/her patients.
25. Serve on call, administratively, operationally and clinically and handles dental emergencies.
26. Understand and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
27. Keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers’ regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
28. Initiate and participates in research projects, both original and in cooperation with Departmental faculty and postdoctoral students.
29. Provide didactic lectures and seminars to the pre-doctoral and postdoctoral students as needed.
30. Acquire and maintains hospital privileges in an area hospital and participates in departmental duties as needed.
31. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Specialty, License/Certification:
A DDS/DMD degree from a CODA accredited school and Board Certification in Pediatric Dentistry; candidate must be eligible for a New Jersey dental license.
An enteral sedation permit and hospital privileges must be obtained within 6 months of date of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrate clinical and administrative effectiveness including training, experience and competency in dental treatment using pharmacological agents and/or general anesthesia. Must have knowledge and ability to execute dental procedures in the areas of restorative dentistry, endodontics, implant dentistry, maxillofacial prosthetics and oral surgical procedures. There must be a demonstrated ability to manage a broad segment of dental problems with minimal supervision.
